"Excellent facilities and staff"

About: West Cumberland Hospital / Gynaecology

My time in Whitehaven began in the day surgery ward which is light and airy with plenty of room between the beds. Unfortunately those of us waiting for Gynecological treatment had a long wait due to the first surgery on the list overrunning. Obviously this couldn’t be helped but we were n’t told we would have a long wait until we asked. The anaesthetic staff were brilliant and my spinal anaesthetic was done quickly and painlessly. The theatre nurse was great at explaining everything and had a good sense of humour. The staff in recovery were good too but I had to stay there a while until there was a bed free on ward 1B. I had tea and toast once I got back on the ward but to be honest I could have done with a sandwich. I didn’t have any pain but was advised to take paracetamol to stop pain building up. I haven’t taken any since I got home. I had quite a restless night but was able to use the en-suite bathroom to freshen up and being in a room on my own meant I wasn’t disturbing anyone by walking about. I went home at 11:00 the next day and have felt well Thank you to all involved. I would have appreciated a leaflet on aftercare and exercises to do once I was home but have got info from the internet.

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment on the NHS website about your recent admission to West Cumberland Hospital.

I am very sorry that you were not kept informed of the theatre delay and I will pass your feedback to the relevant staff to make them aware that you have mentioned this.

Having surgery can be a stressful experience but I am pleased that your anaesthetic, surgery and recovery was eventually quick and painless, with the added bonus of a little humour!

I am pleased that you found the facilities on Ward 1B helpful. Recovery can be aided by feeling comfortable in the surroundings.

Again please accept my apologies that you were not given any information on aftercare as you were discharged. Patients have highlighted this to us in the past and we listened to these concerns. After some investigative work on this the Trust is now in the process of rolling out and implementing a new patient information system. I would like to think that if you ever had to visit the hospital in the future that you would leave us fully informed about any procedure and/or aftercare.

I do hope that you are continuing to recover well at home and have stayed pain free.

Best regards,

Alison S-D
