"Rushed out causing serious bladder problems"

About: Spire Liverpool Hospital

My wife was recently admitted as a private patient to the Spire Hospital Liverpool for facial surgery. Her room was spotless and in general the staff were very caring and considerate. The surgery seems to have gone well and a decision was taken the following day by the staff to discharge her. This decision was taken presumable having liaised with her surgeon although it was know that she was having extreme difficulties passing water and had not had a bowel movement. In the week that followed she was still unable to pass water freely or have a bowel movement. I took what little urine she was able to pass to her local GP and this was tested and found to be free of infection. On the Friday following her discharge we attended again at the Spire. She was in considerable pain and discomfort by this time. On examination it was decided that she she should be fitted a catheter and she was prescribed with an suppository. The catheter was only left in place for at the most ten minutes and only a small amount of urine was released and my wife remained in pain and discomfort. No other action was taken and we left. The suppository worked and she was soon able to have a bowel movement. The bladder problem remained. On the Sunday two days later as my wife was still in considerable pain I telephoned the 'Spire' for assistance. I was told that they were unable to assist and I should take my wife to my local NHS hospital which I did. My wife wife was seen and admitted as an in-patient suffering from post operative bladder problems and I was informed that it was basic care not to release a patient following surgery who was unable to pass water. She had more than a litre and a half of urine in her bladder. She remained in hospital for two day and was released having with a catheter fitter which had to be managed at home with the care of district nurses. At this time we are still not sure if the has been any permanent damage to her bladder. other staff at the 'Spire' and all medical staff we have spoken with have all stated that she should never have been discharged from the 'Spire' with this post operative problem.
