"Improvement still needed"

About: St Peter's Hospital / Maternity

This is the second baby I have had here. I decided to return after issues I had during my first birth were addressed and was assured they had made changes. This time I saw the same midwife for all apps which was great and good now having the phone app rather then having to take notes with you. I also attended the GD clinic and they were always very helpful. I used the birth reflections service but didn't find this useful at all. I was told they would advocate for me to have certain things after birth ( I had anxiety around post care rather then birth) but nothing was noted on my file or accommodated and they didn't provide a follow up after birth either. The labour ward team were wonderful however my section didn't go to plan due to issues it appears were not detected during scans. The theatre team were great and the nurses on the recovery ward. As with my last birth the issues started again once I was transferred to Joan Booker ward. My notes were misplaced so my drugs were given 1.5 hours late. Basically drug runs are always late here. Not what you need when you are in pain. The midwives also like to decide to stop giving you some pain meds even when a consultant has says best to take for a few more days like they know better. I felt there were no senior midwives the first night on the ward. They take ages to come when you ring bell (could be an emergency) hard to find them when you go to look and they seem more interested in keying things into a tablet then talking to you. I was trying to speak to one in a corridor and not wanting to listen to my concerns she basically walked off mid conversation! The ward also really needs a proper clean. Thick dust on fans, chipping paint surely not great for newborns. Improvements with feeding team giving a group session and a pediatrician helping to do newborn checks. Also had good care from community midwives once home. I am not sure I would recommend to a friend only if I knew they could completely avoid Joan Booker ward which is obviously not easy to do!
