"Unexpected Stay for a Dog Bite"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital / Accident and emergency South Tyneside District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was bitten by a dog at work.  I went to A+E later that night as my thumb looked awful.  It was really busy but I could not fault the service I was given. The initial nurse I saw was fabulous, straight away making sure I wasnt in too much pain.  He then took my blood which is normally difficult but he got the vein first time and I didnt feel a thing - impressed!  The doctor was then very thorough sending my for a few tests them home with antibiotics and a trauma appt for the next day.  When I went to the trauma appt I expected them to just say keep it clean and take your tablets, but no they admitted me straight away to get the bites opened up and cleaned out.  I was totally shocked, but all the doctors and nurses made sure everything was explained clearly and I felt totally looked after.

The nurses on the day ward were lovely.  They made sure I had everything I needed.  Every time I filled out a form they explained everything to me so I knew exactly what was going on.  The surgeon and the nurse, Ed, who looked after me in theatre were just lovely.  Getting the local anaesthetic wasnt pleasant but they just kept talking to me and reassuring me.  Being in theatre was weird, everyone was really chatty and kept asking me about my job and tattoos, and telling me about their dogs etc.  It was a much nicer experience than I had expected.

I went home later that night and was told I'd get a phone call the next day with a hand therapy appt.  I was contacted first thing and had the appt the next day.  Wendy from physio was a gem.  She was so gentle in taking off the bandages and asking me lots of questions.  I felt a little faint at one point so she had me lying down on the bed, I made me feel completely at ease at all times.  She have me lots of advice on exercises and how to look after my thumb when on holiday.  I saw her again for a check up, once again she was thorough and kind throughout.  Even though I don't need to go back, she made it clear that I could ring at any time if I was worried.
