"Casualty - brilliant, follow up - not so much"

About: Queen's Hospital / Ophthalmology

I come in to the eye clinic as a casualty on Friday 17th May and service was fantastic, was seen really quickly, was given a thorough check up and given a prescription, I was told by the doctor to come back in a week and that’s they would either call me or send me a letter with an appointment time, the following Tuesday I was called by the hospital to say to come back at 10am that Friday (24th May). When I turned up for my appointment all seemed fine, was seen by a nurse to test my vision and then was told to go back and wait for the doctor. Two hours passed when I went and spoke to the reception who said I would be called next, another hour passed when I was told that I was defiantly on the list and they were just really busy with emergency’s (no problem at all - happy to wait if there was an emergency that come in). Another hour passed when I went back up to reception and they advised me to go back into where the nurse checked me and see when I would be called, the nurse team then advise that they had no paper work for me (even though the nurse who done my vision test had it with me and I handed it back to reception as instructed) and that they don’t do follow up appointments so they didn’t know why I was here. A doctor them come over and apologised for the wait and the confusion and had advised that they had found my paper work, but as the morning clinic had finished I should wait for the afternoon clinic and that I would be seen first. It got to around 1:30pm when they called the first group of people and not me, I decided to wait longer as could’ve been another emergency, i then waited another 15 minutes for the next group to be called and I was still left waiting, at the point, embarrassed and let down I advised reception I had to leave as I was meant to be in work at the point, the receptionist was really apologetic and told me no problem, but to call back next week and rebook. I’ve just called to rebook and I’m told that there is no record of me and that I wouldn’t have an appointment as I went in as an eye casualty first time round.i have no problem if that is the case, I’m happy to go back in as a casualty to have a final check up to make sure everything is ok, but I just feel so let down. I’ve called around three times now and keep getting told to call back when someone else gets in. Really really upset by this, I guess I’m just going to have to hope that everything is ok with my eye as I don’t see myself ever getting that follow up appointment.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, I am so pleased to hear that you were happy with the care provided to you when you initially visited our emergency ophthalmology service, however I am very disappointed to hear the problems you have had since regarding your follow up appointment. Please accept my sincere apologies for this. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) would be able to assist you with trying to get a follow up appointment booked, they can be contacted on 01708 435 454 or by email, bhrut.pals@nhs.net.
