Some feedback with regards to a recent appointment at Out of Hours through 111. I took my 4 year old son in for an ear infection that he’s been suffering from that seemed to give him a great deal of pain, with a high temperature. My appointment was last Sunday at 12:30. He had a temperature of 38 and was taking Ibuprofen. I was hoping to get some relief for him, ideally antibiotics. I completely understand the need to cut back on the amount of antibiotics we give but I’m afraid in this instance I believe we should have been given them. Or at least a discussion around the risks and the option to use them if his case worsened without going back to 111. Unfortunately as a result of not receiving treatment he continued to suffer what I can only imagine must have been excruciating pain for another week. His eardrum perforated on Monday leaving us with the lengthy process of healing to deal with. He has just started swimming lessons and now will not be able to do half of the course. I had to take 2 days off work, my husband took a day off to allow me to work time back. Whilst I completely trust the good intentions of all NHS doctors, in some instances I think a bit of relief for the very young patient (my son) and for our family who haven’t slept properly for over a week now, would have been very welcome. I hope that this message reaches the right person / people and that in future a little more consultation and discussion with the patient / parent on the appropriate way forward with treatment will be considered.
