"Needle stick injury"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Visited A&E following the advice of NHS 24. During one of my shifts I was clearing out a drawer where I fell upon some needles that appeared to have been used. As soon as I realised they where there I walked away from the drawer.

Due to previous work I have no feeling in my fingers therefore I became worried after noticing a scratch on finger. Later that night I became very breathless and my throat developed a cough. That's when I contacted NHS 24 whom where very helpful and arranged a dr to call me back to discuss a plan.

The staff at A&E basically laughed in my face and said that all they would do was take bloods. This meant I would have to sit and wait 6 hours for the doctor to come and take the bloods. The staff didn't show kindness or empathy at all during my visit. I was shocked at the humour my worry seemed to bring the nurses.

Dear shocked and disheartened

Thank you for sharing your recent experience in the emergency department. I am very sorry to hear that you felt the staff laughed at you as this is not the standard of care that I would expect. All patients should be treated with care and compassion at all times and I apologise that this was not demonstrated to you. I will ask staff to reflect on their practice and share your comments with the wider team so we can learn from your experience. If you would like to discuss in further detail please contact patient affairs on 01355 585325 who can then pass your details on to me.

Again I apologise that during such a worrying time, staff did not provide the explanations and reassurance that you should have received. I hope that you are recovering well and look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Lise
