"Spinal Injury - lack of communication"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Xrays and Scans University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I am a teacher and at the end of October 2018 I was injured at work. I was unable to stand up fully and was in extreme pain. I had numbness, pins and needles and tingling in my lower back, hip and legs with numbness in my right foot. The pain was excruciating when trying to stand.

I attended Monklands Hospital A& E and was transferred from here to Wishaw. I was then taken by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth where I had an MRI the following day. I was discharged and told to rest followed by exercise and told to see my own GP.

I was told the report would go to her. It never did and I had to chase it up myself. I was and still am in a lot of pain. If I sneeze or move the wrong way my back goes out. I haven't been able to return to work, I have been taking Amitryptiline, opioids and Naproxen for many months now just to get by.

I have been attending my own GP regularly and after they eventually received the report they referred me back to see neurologist. When I sit I get nerve pain down my legs, When I stand I get severe lower back pain and feels like I am being prodded with a needle. My bowel isn't working too well and I have had to have a number of enimas as well as taking laxitives daily.

It is now well past 18 weeks since I was re-referred and I have had no communication at all. I have tried physiotherapy, accupunture as well as medication. I think the communication is a disgrace and at the very least I think I should be informed of where I am on the list.

Thank you for replying. My referral from my GP was back to Neurology at the Queen Elizabeth Glasgow but as yet I have heard nothing despite trying to call the neurology referral outpatient number. I went to see my Dr today, again and to voice my concerns over my bowel dysfunction. She spoke with one of Orthopedics at Wishaw today and I am on an urgent spinal pathway referral. I will call tomorrow Maureen during opening hours once again thank you for your response.

Dear Oakley24

I apologise for the lack of communication regarding your appointment and the length of time you have had to wait. I understand that this is extremely frustrating.

Can you please email me at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with your personal details (including your date of birth or CHI number) and I will see if I can get an update for you.

Thank you

Nicole
