"Cost of Dressings"

About: Community Care services / Intermediate Care Teams (including reablement)

(as a service user),

A district nurse came out to my house and complained to my private carer that I was  using dressings on my leg wound that were really expensive .

They nurse changed these to a cheaper alternative which resulted in my leg wound leaking out with these dressings .

My family had to phone for my leg to be redressed as the leakage was smelly and over my bandage -going onto my clothes .

This nurse again visited and said to my daughter that the dressings cost forty pounds a box and every time my leg wound is dressed the full box is used .

I have had this leg wound dressed for almost twenty years and it was the tissue viability specialist nurse who advised that these dressings were the best option .

Dear perseussf97

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns over the matter of leg dressings. I am sorry to hear that the District Nursing Services responded to your carer and daughter in this way regarding the cost of supplies. The Nursing staff should not have responded in this manner and we will reiterate to all the District Nurses in North Ayrshire that this is not how we should be practicing.

In the North Health and Social Care Partnership, and indeed across Ayrshire & Arran, we have a formulary we have to use which covers most dressings. However, following further assessment by our Tissue Viability Team, exceptions are made and authorised if required to aid healing for the patient.

If you would like to discuss the matter further, Ms Ann Reid, Senior Nurse would be happy to have a chat with you outwith this forum and she can be contacted at 01294 317735

Once again I can only apologise for this and hope you will be assured that we will try to ensure this does not happen again. In the meantime I hope your wound continues to heal with the prescribed products.
