"Back Spasms from Intrathecal Lumbar Puncture Chemo"

About: St Helier Hospital / Accident and emergency The Royal Marsden Hospital (Surrey) / Clinical oncology

(as the patient),

I had Intrathecal Lumbar Puncture Chemotherapy on Wednesday at The Royal Marsden in Sutton. It was very complicated and took just over 40mins to Site the Needle between the Vertebrae to Inject the Chemotherapy. I laid down for an Hour as instructed as usual and then went Home. Had Little Back Pain on Wednesday Night which I took Paracetamol for then Thursday my Back began to Spasm Up.. Friday it died down then Saturday it came back with a vengance.

I was instructed to call 999 due to my lack of Mobility, so I did.

Ambulance came quite quick and administered Entenox to help relieve the Spasms which it did a little, just took the edge off.

Got to St Helier Hospital. Got put into a Triage Bay around 5pm. They did an ECG and tried to take Bloods with no success, at that point I did tell them I was difficult to Bleed due to my Veins being Poor from all the Cannulas and Bloods I have constantly with 2 weekly Blood Checks at The Royal Marsden and Chemotherapy.

I was then moved round to a Cubicle which they called Women’s Health in A&E where I was just left, no Painkillers after having asked various number of staff for some Pain relief. About 8:30/9pm I was eventually given some Diazepam and Codine which was when my Spasms finally died down and I was able to move.

5 different members of staff and about 15 attempted but Failed Blood Tests and they still had no luck..At what point do the staff say no more attempts? Surely there is a protocol about this as I know they do at The Royal Marsden. My Arms and hands are battered and Bruised.

With Me also being Type 2 Diabetic, Currently on a 5 day course of High Dose Steroids and also Chemotherapy Tablets by the time I got Home it was too late to Eat, Too late to take my Chemotherapy and too late to even take my Evening Dose and Night time dose of Insulin.

I was eventually allowed Home at 2:30am this morning with a box of Diazepam and CoCodamol.

The staff were very over stretched BUT I stress I am a Chemotherapy Patient, Type 2 Diabetic..Which resulted in missing Medication and being left in Pain for 4 Hours just isn’t good enough.
