"Colonoscopy/anxiety"

About: Victoria Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

Years i was suffering from Diarrhoea and the urge to go to the toilet and nothing happening this played a big part in not participating in family activities.I never seen a GP about it because I was embarrassed and also scared of the unknown.

I took the plunge and seen GP who referred me for a colonoscopy, from that moment my anxiety hit the roof,I looked at videos online and listened to people who had it done "mixed opinions" which fuelled anxiety.

I should never have listened or watched as to be honest colonoscopy was ok.The drink was awful and was at the toilet 29 times WOW that wasn't pleasant "worst part of all".Jean "nurse in charge"was great put me at ease and very clear on what was going to happen.Went in for procedure 2 nurses were great Eva and Julie, doctor was great Dr Sengupta.I was sedated and the whole procedure was OK remember some bits and NO pain, once I felt discomfort but to be honest was ok and had 4 biopsies taken.

In whole there was nothing to worry about, and I suffer bad with anxiety but the staff was absolutely brilliant and this made everything so much better and a massive THANKYOU to those involved with Colonoscopy, and the NHS what a great job you are all doing under current times.

Hi Bri1979,

Thanks very much for taking the time to leave some feedback via Care Opinion.

The fear of the unknown is a mightily scary thing, and sometimes even worse than that is when you google it! Unfortunately you have a mixture of both. You might not be surprised to known that you are not alone in this and several of our patients suffer from this fear and 'googled it-itis'!

When you then factor in the frequent trips to the toilet after the disgusting drinks, I'm actually hugely pleased you overcame your fear and had your procedure done. That alone is a big step. I am so glad that Jean, Eva and Julie were able to relax and help you along with Dr Sengupta, all to make your patient journey better. I have passed on your comments to all the staff and they are delighted to have made an impact on you.

You have said that there was nothing to worry about so I'm very glad and I hope that the diarrhoea symptoms will clear and you can return to family activities.

A huge thanks for getting in touch and for your kind words. Can I finally advise that should you ever have to come into hospital again for any reason, please don't cause yourself 'googled it-itis' again:o)

Kind regards

Craig
