"Scheduled admissions waiting area/room"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Dept of Scheduled Admissions

(as a relative),

My mum was scheduled for an operation and was ask to get to hospital for 7.30am and was to fast after 2.30am. So her last food intake was 7pm the night before and last drink at 6.30am.

We had pre op checks at 10.30am after waiting 3 hours then told op was at 12 Then delayed again until 2pm and now later than this as nurse informed us surgeon still with the lady before us.

My mum has been extremely stress as she has a fear of hospitals and enclosed places yet all this time she sits and waits and paces up and down.

Whilst the waiting room is pleasant, i do not think its really needed to have patients waiting this long. We could have arrived at 11 am whilst mum was in a more relaxed place at home.

This should be reviewed asap as the Secretary must have schedules for all the surgeries and times that they would take approx. Why why ask two patients to arrive at the same time for the same surgeon.

Not impressed with this planning a waste of time and not good for patients.

Dear Barney2014,

I am sorry to hear your mum did not have a good experience whilst waiting for surgery in the Department of Scheduled Admissions. I can appreciate that waiting for surgery can be an anxious time and not helped by a prolonged wait. Unfortunately there are many factors that can influence the order that patients going to theatre and therefore more than 1 patient is brought in at the same time to ensure there will be a patient available to be 1st on the list. Your mum did however have a lengthy wait and I would like to apologise about that.

I do hope that your mum is recovering from her surgery and I would like to send her my best wishes.

Update posted by Barney2014 (a relative)

Thank you for your response.

My mum is still in hospital as the 1st op has a complication which cause a second op 2 days into recovery. After a few weeks recovering at a slow pace, we have now discovered that the ops have caused an issue that stops mum from eating as the stomach has a narrowing/so she is having a 3rd op hopefully this coming week.

My mum has had the worse luck with this hospital and she still remains calm, pleasant and very thankful for the help from the ward.

I on the other hand want to shout and scream and ask why has this been allowed to happen without some hospital manager questioning the processes and the errors made to my mum's treatment.

Dear Barney2014

I am very sorry to hear of the complications your mum has faced with her hospital admission and her surgery. It sounds as if she has been very unfortunate and that her operations have not been as straightforward as everyone would have wished. I would suggest that you ask to speak to the Consultant in charge of your mum's care. The nurses can help arrange this. If you would rather, please contact me directly and I will see what I can find out. This would of course be with the permission of your mum.

I can be contacted by email at loldroyd@nhs.net

Kind regards
