"Amazing"

About: University Hospital Of North Tees / Maternity care

Please please get this feedback to the two amazing midwifes that I saw today. I do have their names, however aware it stated not to put those.

I attended the day unit yesterday as I am 14 weeks pregnant and had started to bleed. Having had 2 miscarriages last year you can imagine I was not in a good way. Firstly when I called they were so understanding and patient with me when I was trying to answer questions through tears of panic. But when I walked in the first thing one of them did was say “firstly come here and give me a hug”. I can’t begin to explain how much that meant. Having had a really bad experience with my last miscarriage and amongst other things being told by a doctor “if it’s happening it’s happening, there is nothing you or I can do. Go home and take paracetamol”. Having someone treat you with such basic human kindness and empathy, instead of cold clinical sternness, was incredible. The second then took me into a room and explained what they could and could not do for me in an understanding way, again without the clinical, hospital says no line I have had previously. After checking and confirming my babies heartbeat and all was good, she said “that will be the first time you have heard that is it? Would you like me to do it again so you can record it”? Then after moving into another room to finish up some questions the first midwife came over again “have we put a smile on your face? Then give me another hug”!

It may sound like the simplest of things, but having been through what we have in the last year and both times being spoken to in such cold clinical ways, I don’t even have the words to explain what it is to be treat with such simple human kindness and understating at such a terrifying time.

I know people are quick to get in touch when things go wrong, so I really wanted to make sure I was speaking up when it’s right.

Please thank these two amazing midwifes for me. I have so much more faith now that if I need anything over the next 6 month that I am in the right hands.

Thank you!
