From the moment i was ‘invited’ to have bowel screening as part of a government/NHS initiative I was dreading it but having lost my mother to bowel cancer i knew it wouldn’t be a sensible decision to ignore it. When I booked in i spoke to a very helpful person who was very accommodating in fitting the appointment around my work hours. On arrival at the ward i was greeted by a friendly receptionist who gave me forms to fill in & them i was called through for a brief health check, by a wonderful nurse who was incredibly reassuring and had a great sense of humour; when this was completed i was taken through into the ‘theatre’ where all female staff could not have been more informative, polite, warm, welcoming and above all very respectful - after all it’s not every day a stranger asks you to put on some ‘modesty shorts’ & relax whilst this first time for me, procedure is conducted. Although there is a little discomfort i had a hand to hold/crush which belonged to the wonderful nurse who was there to help me relax and keep me informed throughout. I got the result immediately which showed all was well. I can’t thank all the team enough for making an awkward appointment feel very routine & i urge everyone to take up this opportunity we are lucky enough to be offered for free from the amazing NHS.
