"Lacking in person-centred and holistic care."

About: St Helier Hospital

My father was admitted following sudden onset neuro symptoms. He was admitted to an acute care medical ward for three nights and his care was generally good. On the day of discharge no time was taken to explain to him what would happen next and only after my mother and I waited for some time and requested to see a doctor, did they realise that several mistakes had been made on the discharge letter and told us that we needed to attend ambulatory care the next week and that my father would receive an appointment for ENT. The next week my mother and father attended ambulatory care at 11am as instructed, only to be left waiting for 3 hours. He was then see by a doctor who stated he didn’t know why he was there and had no information about him. He also stated that we would have to attend our GP surgery to request a referral for ENT, which contradicted what we were advised previously. My mother then asked to see the consultant who had initially seen my father during his inpatient stay, as he was also at the clinic. Understandably my mother was somewhat frustrated with how things were progressing and as such took the opportunity to address these with the consultant, but he was extremely rude and dismissive. My parents did not leave ambulatory care until 5pm that day. The experience as a whole has added to the stress experienced by my whole family and reflects a failure to demonstrate the basic core values of the NHS, values which should be exercised by all staff at all times.
