"Glenaffric Stroke Unit"

About: Coathill Hospital

(as a service user),

I suffered a stroke 30 years ago when i was a child, 30 years on the effect of strokes n a young person is devastating i have the problems of an old lady arthritis scoliosis ect when I'm only 37.  my health had deteriorated so badly doctors dont know what to do with me as my disability is complex, so I've spent most of my life being passed around different services, doctors, often the wrong ones only to be told no we cant help you.

The only person who actually  seemed to care was my wee hand therapist Mandy ( forgot mandys second name) shes from monklands hospital shed known me since age 14,  on a very low day I admitted to her how bad I was deteriorating iv had 5 surgical operation on my arm so there is nothing that can be done to rehabilitate my arm because so many metal rods and screws from my wrist upto my elbow. Mandy saw my suffering.  She referred me onto two ladies Suzan (my ot) and fiona my neurophysio) for first time in my full life id met 2 ladies who understood my disability completely.

Within 5 minutes of meeting me fiona noticed the 3 years if pain id been  suffering in my legs was because if my shoe raise been wrongly measured. Id only been given half inch shoe raise to put inside my shoes this had damaged my hips whilst walking around on wrong shoe raise for 3 years because it should've been built in shoe raise of an min of an inch. Fiona has helped me to stay on my legs  a few years longer at least Instead of a wheel chair, shes helped me with exercise regimes to follow and keeping on top of appointments with my orthotics helped with shoe raise issues has helped to many things too mention,

Suzan my ot has worked with me awhile helping me getting on housing list. I now have my new house with no stairs ect, Suzan gave me confidence to drive again by testing my memory reassuring me.. she gave me confidence to drive again and has helped me with so much more forms and things I struggle with, now if met these ladies who understand my difficulties and the effects strokes having on young people. I now call them for help with every stroke related problem i have. These ladies have made such a difference to my life i cant thank them enough. I cried when i first met them to finally have a conversation with people who understood what i was going through and. didn't say no sorry this is wrong service for you. Because most doctors dont see the effects of a stroke on a young person so often they don't know what to do with me, I have made such progress since meeting these 2 wonderfully ladies, I cant thank you both enough love ally and the kid's
