"Scanning department issues and disrespectful staff"

About: St James's University Hospital

Today I feel ashamed of the organisation I once felt proud to work for. I witnessed insensitive, disrespectful and possible dishonest practices within the NHS. My husband was due a cancer staging scan today, when we received a call asking him to get down to the department immediately for his scan on a "first come first served basis". When I informed them that he wasn't due for three hours and would not have fasted sufficiently, we were told the scan was cancelled. We were given conflicting reasons that they had run out of injections, manufacturing difficulties and quality control issues. As they are unable to reschedule for 8 days, this means his other scans have to be rescheduled for after and subsequent cancer treatment will be delayed for 1-2 weeks, Whilst I appreciate staff are under immense pressure, when I mentioned the delay and cancelling the other scans, I was told very unprofessionally that I was wrong, that he wasn't the only patient with cancer, it wasn't her fault and was sick of being shouted at by everyone before disconnecting the call, Thankfully the MacMillan nurse is trying to reschedule the other scans, but this unprofessional and disrespectful attitude has caused avoidable stress and anxiety.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I am very sorry to read that you and your husband had such a distressing time whilst in our care. The level of service that you have described is not what we wish to offer.

I have passed your comments onto the Manager and for service so that they can address the issues that you have raised.

If you have not done so already It would be useful for our services and for future patients if you could discuss the matters you have raised further with our Trust’s Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS). This would also allow us look into the matters you have raised more thoroughly.

Please call our Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 206 6261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net
