Like other Eastenders I know, I have concerns about why we are being sent to hospital like the Southern General and Jubilee in Clydebank when we need to be admitted. I wonder if anyone has considered the fact that patients look forward to their visitors. I also wonder if you even consider how the patients are expected to visit these far away hospitals if they don't drive or if they are elderly especially in the winter months when its dark early. I would like to know what is planned for the Royal if we are being sent elsewhere. My husband and I are elderly and he has lots of health problems. This is a worry for us.

Thank you for your posting, I was not sure if you have recent experience of being transferred to either of the 2 Hospitals mentioned having first been at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, or if this was founded on concerns about what might happen.

I would like to reassure you that the Glasgow Royal Infirmary is undergoing a significant programme of upgrade, and many millions of pounds are being spent to provide upgraded facilities for patients who require treatment in the north of the city of Glasgow. This will be the major in patient hospital in the north of the city, and will work alongside the new Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital. You may know that there is also a significant building programme going on at the present Southern General Hospital site to provide a brand new Hospital for the south of the city, which will be in place in 2015. These two major teaching hospitals will provide the bulk of in patient care for residents in the city.

It is always possible that patients might require to be transferred to other hospitals for highly specialised care, either at the Southern General Hospital (such as the Institute of Neurosciences or the Spinal Injuries Unit) or the Golden Jubilee Hospital for specialised cardiac surgery, but these instances are the exception rather than the rule.

I hope this reassures you that the significant investments in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary is testament to its future in serving residents of the east end and beyond.
