"Endometrial Biopsy at Ninewells"

I had an endometrial biopsy taken a couple of days ago as an outpatient and unexpectedly at what i thought was just a consultation appointment. The procedure was agony and I'm not alone with that opinion. I've read through many accounts from women that it is very painful.

Prior to having this done, I've found out its advisable to take painkillers and even a valium. I was told it would be uncomfortable, that was an understatement. People usually get locals or generals for potentially painful procedures.

There was nowhere to sit down to recover and I was not given a post procedure advice leaflet. What information for after care, I have found out from the internet. I left the clinic in pain and was very dizzy. Later that night I started vomiting and was shaky. I'm still shaky and in pain and nauseous. Its also the weekend so I can't even call my doctor.

The staff were really nice and can only work within the guidelines. I've no complaints about them whatsoever. Its just the lack of information about this procedure and the lack of pain relief and aftercare advice that's making me angry. Is the lack of pre pain relief part of cost cutting in the NHS? Is an advice leaflet too expensive? I think that the guidelines for this procedure must be looked at again.

Dear Wendy 66, staff at NHS Tayside are very sorry your particular experience was so traumatic for you. This is a procedure which is routinely performed in the outpatient clinic with most patients tolerating this without undue distress. However we do recognise that each patient is individual and for you the level of pain was unacceptable. Patients do have the right to ask the doctor or nurse to stop the procedure at any stage. By undertaking this procedure in the clinic setting this prevents the need for a general anaesthetic and a visit to theatre. It is not always possible to predict who will require this investigation and therefore difficult to predict who will require analgesia before their appointment. There is an information leaflet available and we can only apologise that this was not given to you on the day.

We have already discussed your experience with staff in the clinical area, and asked them to reflect on this and their own practice. Staff have been reminded that patient information leaflets are available and should be given to all staff. We do plan to review our clinical guidelines within the department.
