"Lack of communication about my husband's wait at Tiverton Hospital"

About: Tiverton and District Hospital / Endoscopy

(as a relative),

My husband recently went to Tiverton hospital for a procedure, which was perfectly fine, it was what happened before that was the issue.

We arrived at 10am for a 10:15am appointment, nice and early. Sat in the waiting room, and was told that there were two people still to be seen, so I decided to go and do some shopping rather than wait around. I asked what time I should come back, and was told 12.30. I came back at 12.15, and my husband still hadn't had his colonoscopy or gastroscopy. He had been sitting around for 2 hours in a gown, and was fuming.

As it turned out, the equipment had broken down, which happens. But we were told nothing about about the delay. Other patients came in and were seen before my husband, but he was not informed or kept updated as to why. I have 30 years experience working in healthcare, and know how important communication and keeping patients informed is, but hospitals are often, in my experience, not so good at doing this.

Otherwise, I must stress that the staff were wonderful, nurses and doctors, and the procedures went fine when it happened. But big improvements could be made on the patient communication front in my opinion.
