"Great care during my mum's final weeks"

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / Palliative Care and Hospice Victoria Hospital / Renal Victoria Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

Mum was admitted to the Victoria Hospital in the middle of January with stroke-like symptoms which turned out to be caused by her brain tumour. She remained in hospital (A&E to AU1 to ward 22 and finally ward 54) until her death late in February.

It is important to me to write this because I am sure people will come on to complain rather than praise (my other story on here is an example) and the care mum got in the last weeks of her life from everyone from consultants to students was exemplary.

Half way through her 4 week stay, she became very ill and we were made aware that we were in the end stages of her cancer by the palliative care consultants who were very sensitive to our feelings. Her care  was given sensitively and with as much dignity as possible. My brother and I sat vigil with her in SR3 of ward 54 for the last week and a half and not only did they care for her, they cared for us too - feeding us, giving us cups of tea, attending to our buzzes and giving us a shoulder to cry on. I cannot thank them enough for making a harrowing and traumatic situation much easier for us.

Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to feedback about your experience at such a sad and difficult time. I will pass this on to the palliative care consultants who will be glad to hear that they made a difference. It is heartening to know that you experienced something positive in amongst all the awfulness, and am sure this will help in some way as you come to terms with the loss of your mum. Take care.

Kind Regards

Hi, thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion especially during this difficult period. I am sorry to hear of the loss of your mum. I will pass your comments on to the Urology Team. I am sure the team will be delighted to know that not only were they able to provide care to your mum, but that they were also able to provide care and support to you and your family, that made a difference. Thank you and take care.
