"Dental surgery for son with special needs"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

My 8yr old son has learning difficulties and ASD. He had to have a general anesthetic for dental surgery on 28th feb, unfortunately, for him, he has had a few operations and, as a result, is very scared when it comes to hospital appointments. We were dreading it but have to say the staff on childrens ward and in the dental surgery dept could not have been more accommodating! On arrival to childrens ward we were asked whether my son would cope better with a private room instead of the four man room he had been allocated. This kept us and our son a lot calmer! We had the same wonderful treatment in the dental surgery dept, they asked if our son would be happier in an area on his own. They then put lights on the ceiling and found his favourite youtube channel to play songs for him on the computer! Really cannot praise the staff enough. Thank you!!

Thank you for taking the time to share details of your son’s recent experience of children’s ward and his planned dental surgery.

Your comments demonstrate the whole team approach to care where everyone has a part to play in the patient’s journey and it really does mean a great deal to us to know that you felt his needs were being met with understanding and respect.

I will pass your kind comments to the ward team and theatre as I am sure they will be delighted to share your feedback with the wider team.

Take care

Best regards,

Alison S-D
