"I felt a little fobbed off"

About: The Elms Medical Centre

I recently spoke to a GP here and outlined my concerns- a brief history- and expressed that I am in quite a sufficient level of pain- which is unusual for me. The GP made me feel as if I was being dramatic- and that it merely didn't sound like anything of concern. I haven't had an examination and did not get offered an appointment. But my issue is I know my own body- this issue and level of pain is not atypical for me. And I felt almost dismissed over the phone to the point after an 8 minute conversation the doctor told me they have to go as triage calls were building. I felt like an absolute nuisance by the end. I like to consider myself proactive, educated and health aware but feel really disappointed- I could sense the GP didn't particularly take my concerns seriously. I respect it gets busy but I have been experiencing agonising pain-which led me here in the first place. I am really sadddened after previous positive experiences.

Hello, I am the doctor speaking to patients today on the phones, I understand that you have since made a phone call to reception to confirm your identity (of this anonymous comment). I am sorry to hear that you felt so dissatisfied after our conversation today. I did offer you an appointment, and the calls are recorded so this can be confirmed if needed. The outcome of my clinical assessment was that there were no sinister features in the history you gave me, which was very reassuring. It seems this came across to you as seemingly dismissive, which was not my intention. I took a clinical history, offered you an appointment which you declined, prescribed treatment for you and asked you to get back in touch if things did not settle. I think this is reasonable but accept that you did not feel happy with this. After almost 9 minutes, I did unfortunately need to get back to all the other calls that were building up. I felt I explained this politely but I do apologise if you felt fobbed off.

Just to reiterate what I said to you on the phone, we are more than happy to get you back in for an appointment if your symptoms do not improve with the treatment I prescribed.

Best wishes,

Dr Mc Elholm
