"Really impressed with Lister maternity unit and..."

About: Lister Hospital

What I liked

I just want to praise the fantastic midwives and doctors at the Lister Maternity Unit. This was my first baby and I was really impressed by the quality of care and professionalism shown. The Drs and midwives in the consultant led unit made me feel very comfortable and kept me up to speed on what was happening at all times during my labour. Everyone there seemed to genuinely enjoy their work and this came across in the treatment of myself, my husband and my baby. I have always been very nervous about childbirth yet even when things weren't going according to plan, I felt incredibly safe with the team around me. Thank you again to everyone there, you all do a fantastic job!

What could be improved

I feel that there could be more midwives on the pre and post-natal wards. I went in to be induced and I had to request for a midwife several times on the Dacre ward before anyone came to see me, there were only 2 midwives on the ward and they were overstretched. The Gloucester ward seemed similarly overstretched when it came to postnatal care, again there were not enough midwives for the number of patients on the ward and several requests had to be made before I was seen.

Anything else?

A fantastic maternity unity with brilliant staff, however the number of midwives on the Dacre and Gloucester wards should be looked into.

We were really pleased to hear how highly impressed you were about our maternity services, especially the new unit at the Lister. We'll make sure that your kind words are fed back to the team - we know that they'll be delighted to read them!

On the issuing of staffing levels, recently the Trust approved a plan that will see the number of midwives recruited increase so that issues such as those you highlighted are addressed. One of the benefits of having such fantastic facilities is that we don't have problems in attracting midwives to work for us now, so we look forward to the numbers growing steadily over the coming months and years.
