"Autism diagnosis"

About: North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Community Mental Health Team (Adult)

(as the patient),

I've gone through many testing procedures over the past 18 years, following my own daughters autism diagnosis and have been advised on numerous occasions that it is more likely to be high functioning autism.

I eventually plucked up the courage nearing 50 to get a formal diagnosis through my GP.  I was referred to a specialist Psychiatrist who again suggested I was on the spectrum.

However bearing in mind my age they psychiatrist then proceeded to state that without speaking to my parents they were unable to proceed with diagnosis!

I found the psychiatrist rude, intimidating and therefore felt I was unable to pursue this as my confidence was knocked back down to ground zero.

If anyone has any information or support they can offer me I'd be very grateful.

I just need closure once and for all, is that too much to ask?

Hi Mairi,

Firstly thank you so much for contacting me, very much appreciated.

Believe it or not, just yesterday I finally got confirmation in writing from my GP that I am now officially on the ASD. I've been referred to various organisations for further help and support and things are finally looking up. If you don't mind I'll keep a hold of your number for future.

Thank You.
