"Total Hip Replacement"

About: Victoria Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Unfortunately my fluoroscopic injection only lasted 6 weeks so I was referred back to Mr Cowie at Queen Margaret Hospital Dunfermline. It was decided after X-ray that I did indeed need a total hip replacement. Quite a shock for me as I didn’t expect it for some reason. However I got my date of op after pre-assessment in Dec 2018 at the Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy. Everything was explained at pre-assessment by the nurses and the physio and also occupational staff who told me everything to expect and the chair, toilet seat, gripper I would need to aid my recovery. Thorough they were with blood test etc and very kind. Once the big day arrived I was to be honest scared to death as it’s a big operation. No need, the ward 10 staff were rushed as usual but took the time to talk to you and answer any questions. The anaesthetist explained all about the epidural I would have instead of a general and was very kind as he told me all the advantages and disadvantages but there was nothing for me to worry about. Down in theatre all the staff and the doctors and nurses were very attentive, I have nothing but admiration for them. Once done I was back in the ward but unfortunately I had a bad reaction to the medication and my blood pressure dropped quite low, also I had a problem with being sick once I had my tablets. Mr Cowie came to see me and I was taken off the morphine and put on a synthetic one and anti sickness tablets. Although uncomfortable and a bit scared to walk I managed with the help of the staff. Home on the Monday and now for the hard work to start. To be honest without the aids given to  me it would have been hard work. 9 weeks on I am doing really well.and no pain. I just want to praise everyone involved in my care and to thank them for their kindness and patience. If I ever need my other hip done it would have to be Mr Cowie and his team. I thank them all.
