"I came out traumatised."

About: Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust / Inpatient mental health care

(as a service user),

I was sectioned to Highgate MH centre to a mixed ward. Be very clear there is NO segregation of men and women as the staff leave the separating doors open so men routinely wander in to the female only area. The staff don't seem to care. Some of the men are extremely unwell and disinhibited, openly wandering around half naked and some of them masturbating in the corridors. The nurses ignore pleas from women that this is not ok. I don't know what planet some staff are from but the ward is unsafe for ALL women. We had to go to the all female toilet in twos or threes ON THE ADVICE OF NURSES. Because male pts were allowed to follow us.

I was then transferred to the all women Rosewood ward. Oh my God. It seemed like chaos, violence, staff staying in an office where they can't see patients at all except on cctv. The place was absolutely filthy. The ward is decrepit. The previous Rosewood ward was at least open and airy and staff could see. Now it feels worse than One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. The nurses I met were so so rude,  who refuse to answer the door when knocked. Nurses who openly talked about patients as being more trouble then they are worth. Actual words spoken.

I was terrified the whole time. I was suicidal and they didn't talk to me the entire admission. There was NO care plan. I came out traumatised.

Thank you for your feedback which you posted online on 15 February 2019.

This was concerning your experience of Highgate Mental Health Centre and Rosewood ward as an inpatient.

It is clear from your feedback that you felt unsafe and unsupported during your admission and threatened by the behaviour of male service users. You also said that the ward environment on Rosewood was unclean.

We have taken your concerns seriously and apologise that your experience of our service did not match the high standards we aim to achieve.

We value complaints as a vital source of feedback about the services we provide and are committed to using this feedback to generate improvement.
