I recently had a baby at Tameside General Hospital. This was my first baby and therefore I was unsure what to expect. I experienced the triage unit, labour ward and ward 27 and felt like every area seemed under staffed, stretched and that members of staff were stressed which impacted the care, professionalism and birth experience.
During my labour the midwife was out of the room much more than she was in it with me. This made me feel anxious. If I used the buzzer it could take a long time to be answered. My husband had to leave the room to alert the midwife that the babies heart rate seemed to be dropping with contractions and the machine was alarming. I’m guessing my midwife most have had more than one patient.
I know the NHS is of course stretched and suffering but I don’t think it should impact on the safety of care. Ward 27 seemed like utter chaos and I could not wait to leave. I even witnessed a midwife cry which was very upsetting.
"It should not impact on the safety of care"
