"Excellent staff, very bad conditions and facilties..."

About: Sutton Hospital

What could be improved

I found the hospital to be dirty and badly maintained. Ceilings were rotting, paint pealing off the walls, bins overflowing in the bathrooms. I was shocked at the state this hospital was in. I have seen better facilities in third world countries. I do not know how it is possible to keep a hospital clean and hygienic if it is in such a state of disrepair.

On the plus side, the staff were amazing, the conditions these poor people have to work in is disgusting. I feel very sorry for them.

Anything else?

Please clean your hospital!

Thank you for letting us have your feedback about the care you received at Sutton Hospital. I am delighted to hear your comments about the staff and I will pass these on.

However, I was disappointed to read the comments you made about the facilities/cleanliness.

As such, I would like to reassure you that we have an absolute commitment to ensuring our hospitals are clean and welcoming and recent inspections (by various independent bodies) suggest we are meeting the standards required. You can read more about this here: www.epsom-sthelier.nhs.uk/performance.

Having said that, we recognise that the 'physical' environment at Sutton is 'dated' and needs improving. As such, we will be spending more than £10 million over the next year improving the infrastructure across all of our hospitals, including Sutton. This includes upgrading ward and outpatient areas, as well as communal areas such as a receptions.

In addition, as part of our plans to spend £219 million redeveloping St Helier Hospital, Sutton will become home to many of the outpatient services currently provided at St Helier (on a temporary basis until the work at St Helier is completed). As part of this scheme, many millions of additional funds will be invested into improving the Sutton site to ensure it meets the highest possible standards. You can read more about this on our website: www.epsom-sthelier.nhs.uk/sthelieredevelopment.

As you would expect, I have passed your feedback about the buildings on to our estates team.

Thank you again for taking the time to let us have your comments.

Pippa Hart

Director of Nursing
