"Acted in my best interested and cared about how I felt"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I has an appointment with a registrar within the gynecology department and in my opinion it didn't go very well. They showed no empathy or understanding, was condescending and didn't treat me like a woman who was concerned and frightened. This registrar booked me in for a biopsy, no anaesthesia even though I explained past procedures had caused me to pass out. I am not embarrassed or anything like that but having 2 caesareans I know which bits hurt and which doesn't.

On the way home I had decided not to go ahead with the procedure as this person had scared me out of my skin and had not focused on my concerns or put my mind at rest. I felt like I was seen as a piece of meat.

My husband knowing how important it was that I have this biopsy rang the ward to explain how scared I was and that I was refusing to have the procedure done.

A health care nurse called Michelle asked me to call her. She spent about 20 minutes on the phone explaining what would happen how I would feel and what they would do to help me.

I turned up today she met me in the clinic, she gave me a big smile and said it was nice to meet me. She spoke to the senior Dr in the clinic expressed how worried I was and got him to do the biopsy himself. She was so personable and spoke to me woman to woman who knew this was a big deal and not a simple procedure.

Because of Michelle and her caring nature the Dr took his time explained things clearly to me and I agreed to the procedure, unfortunately the same thing happened as the last time and he had to stop but he said it wasn't my fault he had a plan b and then took time to talk me through plan b.

I came away from this appointments not thinking I had wasted people's time and been a complete wuss. But thinking they had acted in my best interested and they had cared about how I felt.

This was all down to Michelle.

I am sorry I don't know her second name but I felt I had to give feed back as she really showed she cared about me.

We're sorry your first appointment was not of the standard our patients would expect, but so pleased to hear that Michelle was able to support you when you had the biopsy taken. We'll make sure the staff hear about the positive difference empathy and understanding can make to a patient's experience. Thank you for posting this.
