"AAA Repair at Ayr"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Acute Medicine University Hospital Ayr / Intensive Care Unit University Hospital Ayr / Vascular Surgery

(as a relative),

Our dad went to Accident and Emergency at Ayr Hospital in November 2018 after his GP suspected a large Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. A CT scan detected an 8cm AAA which was close to bursting. He was operated on the following day.

During surgery that lasted 6 hours, the Vascular team under Mr Taha carried out a AAA repair and also found a blocked femoral artery that needed a ileofemoral bypass and a common femoral artery endarterectomy. He was then transferred to ICU for one night, and then to HDU for 9 days where they also treated him for pneumonia, a paralytic ileus and atrial fibrillation, all of which he developed after his surgery. He was then transferred to Station 2 for further care and rehab before being discharged home after another week.

The whole family would like thank Mr Taha and the vascular team; staff in diagnostics; staff on ICU/HDU; and also the staff on Station 2. The level of skill, care and treatment that dad received, particularly from Mr Taha and his team and from ICU/HDU staff, was exemplary. Staff were also very considerate of our mum who had a round trip of 52 miles each day to visit dad.

We were sorry to hear that Mr Taha has now left Ayr for Wales and that vascular inpatient services may be transferred from Ayr to Hairmyres Hospital.

We know that without the fantastic treatment, care and attention that dad received at Ayr Hospital he wouldn't be with us today.

Thank you very much for taking the time to acknowledge the excellent care and treatment provided to your dad at University Hospital Ayr. I will ensure your comments are passed on to the Vascular and ICU/HDU teams.

Thank you once again for taking the time to post, staff are always pleased to have feedback from patients and their relatives.

Kind regards

Karen
