"Do staff even read referral notes?"

About: Northwick Park Hospital

A week ago I was diagnosed as having broken my ankle at the Urgent Care Centre at the Central Middlesex Hospital and was told that I would be referred to the virtual fracture clinic.

When I gave my contact details, I did not provide my telephone number as for a decade I have suffered domestic abuse by telephone. For this I am currently under the care of two psychiatrists. I said that I may be contacted by letter or email, my address being provided.

Today I received a photocopy marked discharge advice on which there was a handwritten post-it note asking me to call the trauma co-ordinator, no name nor telephone number being provided, asking me to call.

I have generalised anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder relating to the abuse I received by phone, so this letter caused me to suffer a panic attack.

When I called I tried to make staff aware of my personal issues and why phone contact was highly inappropriate, I was talked over and cut off twice.

Finally I left a message on their answering machine, but only to say I am seeking fracture care elsewhere as I have no faith in their ability to provide appropriate care for me.

So this afternoon I will hobble on pain on crutches back to the Central Middlesex Hospital to see if I can be referred to either UCLH or St Mary's Paddington.

I am appalled by the callous treatment I have received.

Dear Mr Calderwood

Thank you for feedback about your recent visit to Central Middlesex Hospital.

I understand that these concerns are being handled through the complaints process and we are of course unable to reply to your specific issues here through this platform.

I have been assured however that the response to your concerns will be finalised and sent to you next week.

With regard to your planned visit to Central Middlesex Hospital today, I can confirm that the Urgent Care Centre will be unable to refer you directly to another Trust.

You would therefore need to see your GP who would be able to refer you to another Trust if it is felt appropriate.

I am very sorry for the difficulties you are having with your referral.

Kind regards

Peter Hare

Patient Relations Manager
