A week ago I was diagnosed as having broken my ankle at the Urgent Care Centre at the Central Middlesex Hospital and was told that I would be referred to the virtual fracture clinic.
When I gave my contact details, I did not provide my telephone number as for a decade I have suffered domestic abuse by telephone. For this I am currently under the care of two psychiatrists. I said that I may be contacted by letter or email, my address being provided.
Today I received a photocopy marked discharge advice on which there was a handwritten post-it note asking me to call the trauma co-ordinator, no name nor telephone number being provided, asking me to call.
I have generalised anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder relating to the abuse I received by phone, so this letter caused me to suffer a panic attack.
When I called I tried to make staff aware of my personal issues and why phone contact was highly inappropriate, I was talked over and cut off twice.
Finally I left a message on their answering machine, but only to say I am seeking fracture care elsewhere as I have no faith in their ability to provide appropriate care for me.
So this afternoon I will hobble on pain on crutches back to the Central Middlesex Hospital to see if I can be referred to either UCLH or St Mary's Paddington.
I am appalled by the callous treatment I have received.
"Do staff even read referral notes?"
