"So lucky to have such dedicated professional staff"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Orthopaedics (Ward 3C) University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as a parent/guardian),

On Friday my son attended day surgery to have an external fixater removed and a plaster fitted to his broken leg.

Sam broke his leg whilst performing a move on his stunt scooter back in October.  He was taken by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride where they diagnosed a broken leg, both tibia and fibula, with a particularly nasty spiral fracture.

Sam was put in plaster at Hairmyres and we were advised he would need surgery the next day.  We were given the choice to transfer to the Children's Hospital which we did.

Sam was seen by Mr Rowlands at the Children's Hospital who performed his surgery in October and the subsequent surgery to remove the external fixater in January.  I can only describe Mr Rowlands as exceptional.  He has been extremely professional throughout and has built up an excellent rapport with our family and importantly Sam who has found this experience fairly traumatic at times.  Mr Rowlands explained everything to both Sam and ourselves in language that we could understand and always asked if we had any questions that we needed to ask.

The support from the physio (Shona) and other staff on the ward has also been excellent, keeping Sam in good spirits and attending to his needs at all time.  We are so lucky to have such dedicated professional staff at all levels in our NHS, thank you.

Dear HappyHappy

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion.

It sounds like Sam and you all as a family have had a very traumatic time since the accident in October. It is great to hear that you feel the care and support you have received from the whole team has been excellent and has really helped Sam and yourselves to cope with 2 episodes of surgery and all the treatment in between.

We will pass your kind words on to the team and to Mr Rowlands and Shona in particular. I know they will be delighted to receive this.

I hope Sam is recovering well after the removal of his external fixator and gets back to full strength soon.

Best wishes

Pam

Dear HappyHappy

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

It does sound like Sam has had a difficult time with such a nasty injury. It is however good to hear that you are happy with Sam's care throughout his journey and thank you for mentioning Hairmyres.

I hope that Sam is recovering well and thank you again for your comments.

Best Wishes

Lise
