"Disappointing endoscopy experience at Rotherham"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I recently attended the Rotherham Foundation Trust Hospital for various tests on my kidneys, bladder and had to have a procedure done called a cytoscopy in the endoscopy unit. I wanted to say that the experience in xray, ultrasound and all the staff involved with my appointment were good and i was treated with respect and dignity. I knew I had been referred to the hospital under the two week wait, and with that information I was concerned and very anxious about the whole experience and the various possible end results.

I am a little disappointed however in the experience I received in the endoscopy unit, albeit the staff were very friendly, comforting and reassuring, the experience I had with the consultant left me feeling a little put out. I still dont know who I saw and who did the procedure, I felt like I was put on the table and the procedure was underway without explaining who he was, what he was looking for or indeed letting me fully explaining my circumstances and why I was there. I felt a little like a piece of bone and meat and he just wanted to get on with what he had to do, he took a biopsy didnt really explained why. I appreciate the unit was very busy however I am very passionate about people being treated with respect and dignity, I was very stressed and feeling vunerable . Once the procedure was over I was told that I could get dressed and whilst I was getting dressed I could hear through the curtain the consultant, dictating his letter to his secretary, saying that ultrasound looked fine and so did xray. Once dressed and outside the curtain, he did say that he was sending me for a CT scan and that I wouldnt get my results today, but once the biopsy and ct completed. When that will be I have no idea, or any resurrance I Ieft there as quickly as possible, had lots of questions but didnt have the opportunuity to discuss my issues, felt a little like being on a conveyabelt machine. Just really disappointed with that side of my care, and that attitude and respect could have made a big difference to how I was left feeling after the procedure.

Dear madeinyorkshire,

Thank you for your posting on Patient Opinion. We very much appreciate patient feedback and whilst we are pleased to learn that the staff involved with your care in x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy were friendly and treated you with respect and dignity, we are concerned to learn of your experience whilst having your procedure undertaken by the doctor and how it left you feeling very stressed, vulnerable and unsure, which is clearly unacceptable and for that we apologise.

In order for us to best address the issues you raised we would really value you making direct contact with us via Patient Services, who have been made aware of your concerns, direct on either complaints@rothgen.nhs.uk or 01709 424461, who I am sure will be able to help you.

With best wishes,

Grace
