"Really disappointing service"

About: Sheffield City GP HC (Wic)

I have been to the walk in centre before and am accepting that its always going to be very busy however today when I attended they seemed to have this new system where you can't even drop off your form to be triaged until your number is called. I am not sure who came up with this idea but I'm perplexed as to how you can effectively prioritise or signpost people if you are not actually triaging them on arrival it seems very strange. Nevertheless I sat down and waited an hour and a half or so for my number to be called. When the lady at the desk asked me what I needed which was a prescription for a specific pain relief tablet I have had as PRN in the past and for which I supplied all the documentation from previous medical teams for I was told they couldn't help me there as they are unable to prescribe that medication and I should go to A&E. Now I really wouldn't have minded the fact that they couldn't prescribe it had they told me that sooner rather than delaying triage for 1.5hours in favour of a number system that clearly doesn't work... not only have I wasted my time but also they have wasted their time by having me sit there when they could have signposted me much sooner. I asked the lady if there was an alternative to attending A&E as I don't believe it is a valuable use of A&E's time waiting for a specific prescription and she said there wasn't. Thankfully I ignored her advice rang 111 who managed to arrange for me to attend a GP appointment at the NGH instead. I don't understand why this wasn't suggested to me by the walk in centre and in fact when I asked her about ringing 111 she said that they wouldn't help. Now given that the NHS is currently in a state of crisis particularly in our A&E's surely this walk in centre shouldn't be suggesting so many people attend A&E for things that really only require an urgent GP appointment as that's a complete waste of NHS resources in an already stretched service? I really think this service needs to re-consider where they are signposting people and how they are triaging them as I don't think the current system is working.

Suggested improvements:

1) This walk in centre I think really needs to consider their triage system - the wait number system clearly does not work and prevents prioritising people that need to be prioritised and signposting those who need to go elsewhere.

2) If they are unable to help then they should consider signposting people to ring 111 to see if there is an out of hours GP that can help a person before sending half the building off to A&E

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback regarding your visit to the Sheffield nhs walk in centre. We are currently in the process of embedding a new streaming system and I do apologise for the delay and miscommunication on your visit. If possible could you contact me at carlywoodward@onemedicare.co.uk with more information so that I can investigate this further.
