"Treatment following accident"

About: Ealing Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was knocked off my bike in Ealing and taken to Ealing Hospital.  I would like to thank all those who cared for me, from the ambulance crew who gave me gas and air at the scene and a morphine drip during the journey, to the orthopaedic trauma team who met me, assessed me, put in train all necessary tests and diagnostics and who operated on me the same afternoon, replacing my hip joint as my femur was broken at the neck.  I had superb treatment from start to finish and, as one who usually 'goes private', I cannot fault the NHS at Ealing for their care and treatment.

Unfortunately the ward was another matter.  The staff were excellent, caring and cheerful.  But if you have a disruptive patient on the ward, as I  and the nursing staff endured, I feel they should have been moved to a side room.  Recovering from major surgery, a good night's sleep is essential and I did not get one in five nights.   But please give my thanks to everybody concerned in my care.

Dear Francoise

Thank you for your helpful feedback. I am delighted to hear that you had such superb treatment. It sounds like you took quite a knock.

I am very sorry that despite the great care your nights were disturbed, especially when you definitely needed to rest and recover. We would normally try and nurse a disruptive patient in a side room - in their interests and in the rest of the ward's. Unfortunately this is not always possible. We have to prioritise the side rooms for people with infection and we have to be especially careful about this on surgical wards where people may have open wounds. I am sorry if this was explained to you at the time.

I hope you are recovering well. I will share your feedback with the teams at Ealing.

Best wishes

Sue

Update posted by Francoise (the patient)

I appreciate your explanation about the risks of infection & quite understand. What offended me most about this particular patient — apart from the noise — was the way they treated the staff, never said please or thank you & tried to monopolise them. They cannot answer back & I felt quite cross on their behalf. But I am over all grateful for the treatment I received.
