"Appauling treatment from all at the Disney ward ..."

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital

What I liked

My daughter was sent straight from our Gps surgery to be seen to urgently with diabetes type 1 and was kept waiting for over an our and was never treated and in the end we took our daughter home. We had a nasty call from the Gp there threatening us with social services and even the police were brought into the situation. Their excuse was there was a trauma case which was more important than my 11 year old diabetic daughter. I complained to the relevant person who stood by her staffs behavior and ony took note about the staffs slow change over and them standing around gossiping. The doctor in question even denyed the phonecall to me and my family which greatly upset my ill daughter. She was evenually taken to the Hull Royal Infirmary who were exellent andI definately would reccomend them but as for the Scunthorpe hospital I would not recommend them at all.

What could be improved

The staff change over could have been done quicker and more doctors should have been available as I didn't think that it took all of the staff to deal with one traumatised child.

There should be alway a member of staff at the desk as their was not the night we were there so that patients and parent could be kept informed and if they choose to leave the ward not be expected to wait for a member of staff to appear. the ward she was admitted to didn't know anything about her admission and the bed she was given was not even made up.

They should also get their facts right about what the social services do as when i saw them they were very angry that the Dr who rang us stated that they would take our daughter away from us which is wrong. This Dr didn't even get a telling off over this. He should have be as should the staff.

The Trust always strives to provide quality care at all times, unfortunately due to the nature of hospital services, some patients do need to wait to be seen in order of clinical priority, not in order of attendance. Staff also have a duty to refer to agencies where they may have concerns. We regret that the experience has not been a positive one, and would be more than happy to meet to discuss further, and would ask the person concerned to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison service on (01724) 290132 or (01472) 875403.
