I attended Glasgow Royal Infirmary for a skin biopsy this week. I was worried about the procedure and the obvious implications. The car parking was troublesome as I had to take a ticket and worry about paying when all I should have been worried about was the procedure.
When I arrived on the ward everyone was lovely (lyfli) - the health care assistants who greeted me and gave me the forms to complete. I really appreciated the personal approach of the theatre nurses who both introduced themselves by name.
I walked down to theatre with these nurses to meet the theatre team. They all introduced themselves by name which is very reassuring and comforting.
When I was in theatre , one of the nurses held my hand throughout the procedure. This was not essential but certainly made the whole procedure much more human and relatable.
I wasn't the best patient, but I really appreciate the effort people go to to look after me and others like me. . After all I am not just a skin lesion to be biopsied, but a person with worries and paranoia and stress who needs to cope while their skin lesion is biopsied.
Thank you to all in GRI canniesburn unit who made the procedure and surgery so much less stressful and made me feel like I was "their patient" as opposed to "a skin lesion at Christmas!"
