When I arrived at Guy’s Cancer Centre to have a basal cell carcinoma removed from my nose by Mohs micrographic surgery, despite the much appreciated empathy and skills of both my cancer nurse and clinical psychologist I was still fearful – because there was no way of knowing, until the surgeon set to work, how far the tumour had progressed. Fortunately, although I’d had the blemish on my nose for many years, it turned out that it hadn’t gone far. In the event I couldn’t have wished for better treatment. From the moment I stepped into the Dermatology Department I sensed an atmosphere of calm and friendliness. The nurse relaxed me immediately, the surgeon deftly did what she had to do, then sewed me up with a fine thread and tiny neat stitches. I felt no pain. Three weeks later I’m amazed by the wonderful job she has done. But my special thanks go to the Sister, not just for her expertise, but for her exceptional kindness and understanding.
"An exceptional experience"
