One year ago today I was admitted to the ROH for an ACDF to fix a damaged disc in my neck.
Before the surgery I was in persistent discomfort, unable to drive for more than 40 minutes without stopping as the vibration caused pain and tingling in my right arm. I couldn't lift anything heavier than a couple of bags of sugar. It affected my sleep, my work and restricted all my activity to a greater or lesser extent.
Spinal surgery is a scary prospect but the consultant did a great job at explaining the procedure and making me feel confident in his skill and my recovery prospects.
The staff I met in all the departments were professional and approachable, I had no major issues and would particularly recognise the pharmacist advanced practitioner in the pro-op clinic for her skill and the staff nurse on the night shift after my surgery.
I had very little pain post op, I was discharged the next day as planned and went about the gradual process or regaining my mobility.
The consultant was a little concerned at my outpatients appointment in May that I didn't seem very excited at being discharged to resume all my usual activities and go out and enjoy them.
This was partly due to my crazy working hours as I had been up at 1am for a 12hour shift that had started at 3am, I was tired.
I was also uncomfortable as I had a really cramped long haul flight a few days before and my neck and shoulders were stiff and aching.
Mainly though, I couldn't quite believe it!
So I would like to correct any wrong impression I gave.
I am delighted to say I am back to all of my usual activities, Just returned from holiday in Singapore on a 14 hour flight with no discomfort at all and can drive all the way to south wales without any problem.
So thank you all.
I would definitely recommend your hospital and the surgeon to anybody needing that surgery.
If you're wondering why I waited so long its because I suddenly realised it was the anniversary of getting my little bits of plastic and metal work so I thought it was time I expressed my thanks.
