What I liked

My mother who is 92 was admiited to F10 (medical assessment ward) where although the nursing on the ward was efficient it lacked personal caring skills.She was then transferred to D2 and was a patient in D2 for 6 days. The care in this ward was absolutely brilliant. I have never seen nursing staff constantly work so hard and with such empathy for very sick and at times dying patients.

D2 is on the old original side of the hospital and although the ward still has a sisters office. They have managed to keep 3 nursing stations within the ward and the nursies are constantly watching the patients unlike the newer part where everybody seems to congregate in the ward corridor.

As most of the patients were elderly and infirm it was nice to see nursies getting down to talk to patients on eye to eye level instead of from standing height.

The cleanliness of the ward was also excellent.

What could be improved

On discharge from the ward I found this very poor as patients are transferred to the discharge suite at the front of the hospital and as I saw some patients who still looked sick and infirm were left to sit and wait for ambulances for up to 5 hours. One old lady had been told that because she had come from Heywood (20 minutes on the motorway) she would have a long wait and had been in a chair for 5 hours. I found this disgraceful.

Anything else?

A very good start to admittance from A&E ,Efficient but uncaring attitude in F10. Real nursing skills and excellent caring skills provided in D2(Couldn't praise the staff both doctors and nursies enough). Final stage in Discharge suite very poor.
