"Miscarriage"

About: Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience when going through my miscarriage. I came to St Helier A&E on Friday 27th October with pains (like contractions) and bleeding that had begun 5 days prior. At this point I was what I believed to be 11 weeks pregnant (due to have my first scan the following Monday) and had called the midwife hotline twice for advice. Myself and my boyfriend were sat in A&E for over 2 and a half hours. Finally once I was seen, I tried to explain my symptoms but the nurse/Dr just kept talking over me. She then asked to push on my stomach to see if I had pain which I didn't. She then said as the bleeding wasn't heavy and the pains weren't severe I would have to 'just wait' until Monday for my scan as planned. I was told I could take paracetamol. No blood test taken as I had one at the beginning of the week (to which I still to this day have never been given my results). I went home where the pain progressed but I took paracetamol as I was told.. I then experienced a blood clot and called the midwife hotline again who said 'There is no point going back to A&E as you will be waiting for hours, just rest, try not to worry, put your feet up, watch a film and relax and go for your scan as usual on Monday.' I was annoyed by this as I was really scared but though that as no one else seemed worried I thought maybe I shouldn't... Over the weekend the pains remained and I went to my 12 week scan as usual on Monday @4:30pm. At reception they asked if I would like photos which I had to buy BEFORE the scan which I do NOT agree with as now I have to arrange a refund which is last thing on my mind. I was told it's a miscarriage and that they would cancel any upcoming appointments for me and took me to speak to someone at the Early Pregnancy Unit. I then heard them say they could see i'd come to A&E on Friday but that my name was logged incorrectly! There was no Dr to speak to me this day so I was asked to come back the following day to EPAU to which I was waiting for 3 hours again for a 5 minute conversation with the Dr regarding my options for the removal of products procedure. I was booked in for Nov 3rd at 11.45am and to be there 7:45am and to fast before confirmed on paper. Got to the hosp at 7:45 to be told by the Matron I was too early and was meant to be an afternoon appointment and there were no beds available for me so to go home and have a cup of tea which then made me last to be seen as this can cause problems during surgery! The Matron apologized to my mother who accompanied me. The nurse on the ward was funny and down to earth making things easier to swallow as well as the ladies who took me to and from theatre. Procedure went well apparently but there are no follow ups unless there are complications. I have since had phone calls from the hosp to confirm upcoming midwife appointments which have upset me further and I feel is insensitive. Not very good patient care.
