I was experiencing noticeably increased floaters and lightning flashes (the latter new to me) in my right eye, which an internet search suggested were probably harmless but could have indicated a serious issue. I could not get an urgent appointment at my optician and was advised that they would simply send me to LRI. Having a fair bit of experience of LRI casualty, I expected a long wait (and I am not criticising here).
I was very pleasantly surprised. I was seen very soon after arrival for initial assessment and then had a short wait to see a nurse who instilled dilating eye drops and once these had taken effect my eyes were examined by a doctor. I was reassured that the condition was not serious but I had done correctly in getting it checked, and given advice on not over-exerting for a while, together with information on what to be aware of in the (fortunately unlikely) event of developing a detached retina.
All of the staff I met were very professional, friendly and reassuring and I actually got a bus home within 2 hours of arriving. Thank you.
(Just for info: one thing I wish I’d been aware of before visiting is that a pair of very dark glasses would have been very useful after the eye drops, because one’s pupils are wide open for several hours and on a brilliant November day with a low sun it was pretty unpleasant getting home.)
