"Ward 3 Experience"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I was admitted into Ward 3 after being brought into the hospital with severe headaches that made me become unresponsive. I was given CT scans fairly quickly and examined by the doctor who made the decision to keep me overnight. I was not swabbed before going onto the ward which was very concerning to me as I was when I stayed in the QE and I thought hospitals had a crack down on infection control?? The toilet on the ward was not kept clean throughout my stay, there were urine filled bowls in the toilet that were left on the floor all night and no one collected them, the toilet seat was so bad my partner actually cleaned it himself because he didn’t want me sitting on it. The next day I asked to see the mental health team and was never got back to about it, I asked for my kidneys to be checked because I hadn’t passed urine...that never happened. I had to have a lumbar puncture done which two doctors attempted on the ward unsuccessfully. They passed me down to surgery where the doctors told me that the first attempt had been done in the completely wrong place on my back, so I had been put through distress and comfort over their carelessness. I know hospitals aren’t all about food but it is appalling and I preferred to go hungry. My partner actually brought me food in because I couldn’t stomach anything given to me on the ward. I became unresponsive on the morning again and when I eventually came round there was no concern, one of the nurses said “while you were asleep we tried to give you pain relief.” I wasn’t asleep I was unresponsive but no one bothered to check the difference! I was then discharged without an actual diagnosis or cause of what happened, rang the doctor the next morning and they still couldn’t explain why and told me to see my own GP. I’m now sat here still in severe pain with my head and no further forward. I feel like they couldn’t wait to get rid of me to be honest and I was discharged way too early. Oh also, the ward I was on was supposed to be an all female ward but I woke up and saw a man with his penis out across the corridor. Yet they wouldn’t let my partner stay the night with me because he’s male but seeing a random old man’s penis on an apparent female ward is acceptable? Give me a break. Think I’ll stick to the QE from now on and hopefully nothing ever happens where I have to be taken to this hospital again.

Dear Jade,

I am very sorry to read your review, thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us. It is only hearing from our patients that we can begin to look into how we can make things better. We would like to continue to work with you to make things better and learn from what happened. We would encourage you to email us at Patient.Experience@nhct.nhs.uk with your name, home address and date of birth. This will allow us to see the dates that you stayed with us and the members of staff who may have been on duty at the time.

Please do get in touch with us, in the meantime we will share your review with the team on the ward. I will also share your comments regarding cleanliness to our estates team to look into.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
