"The state of the ladies toilet beside the WRVS Canteen at Gartnavel General Hospital,Glasgow"

About: Gartnavel Royal Hospital

(as the patient),

I recently had the occasion to attend an outpatient clinical at Gartnavel General Hospital.

As I had travelled for over 2 and a half hours, prior to going to the clinic I went to use the toilet located beside the WRVS Canteen. I thought the state of this facility was extremely poor.

The toilet bowl and wash hand basin were clean but the floor and tilework were dirty. I thought the dirt on the tile ledge was tile cement, but on wetting a paper towel and running it along the ledge, the black dirt came off on the towel. I am in no way blaming the cleaner assigned to this toilet as she is obviously keeping the bowl and wash hand basin clean in spite of the odds.

This facility needs to be deep steam cleaned and only then will the cleaner be able to keep it up to an acceptable standard. No wonder there are hospital acquired infections.

Response from Paul Cannon, Head of Administration, Acute Services Division, Greater Glasgow & Clyde NHS

Thank you for your feedback and for pointing out the poor state of the facilities you used at Gartnavel General Hospital.

I have alerted Facilities colleagues to this feedback and will ensure that this is acted upon as soon as possible.

Once again our apologies if the facilities at the Hospital fell below the standard we would expect, and for alerting us to this.

I thought you would like to know that as a result of your feedback the local Site Facilities Manager arranged to have both the ladies and the gents toilets outside the WRVS inspected as soon as your concerns were drawn to his attention. He reported that there was some dust on the ledges (which was disappointing) but overall the facilities were both found to be clean.

The toilets were inspected prior to the opening of the WRVS facility the morning after your feedback came to our notice, and before the adjoining out patient clinics and the activity associated with these facilities started in earnest for the day. Therefore we would have expected the toilets to be particularly clean at that time. That said, we can only apologise that you found the toilet to be in the condition described. We do take infection prevention very seriously and the toilets are subject to daily cleaning and monitoring. Any defects identified during our monitoring are followed up. We shall continue to monitor these toilets closely.

I have been asked to thank you for drawing this to our attention. We do follow up and respond to all such observations as quickly as possible.
