What I liked
Physio seemed good
What could be improved
My partner was admitted to Wye Ward following a stroke. He is much younger than the average patient. Everybody else on the Ward seemed very dependent and he received very little attention and did not have the opportunity for regular showers. He felt extremely fed up and isolated as a result. The patient experience could have been improved by:
More staff, they seemed really overworked
More specialist provision for younger patients
Wi fi so he could have had contact with the outside world NB many hospitals are now providing this facility
Daily bath or shower
Immediate speech therapy and OT
We were really relieved that he was transferred to a specialist rehab (NHS) facility in Wales which has excellent facilities (speech therapy, OT, physio) and where he got a lot of help.
Anything else?
Stroke care does seem to be a cindarella service compared with other departments. I do wonder about the appropriateness of acute care for a younger person being provided in what is fundamentally an older person's ward.
"Mixed, no criticism of staff more of resources and..."
