"Not the best experience!"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

We brought my eight month old daughter into Harlow hospital towards the end of October 2018. She had a very high temperature, constantly being sick for more than 4 days, diarrhoea, no wet nappies and refusing any milk/food. She hadn't eaten properly in nearly a week and was very uncomfortable. My main concern for my young daughter was dehydration however, the triage nurse was quite dismissive I found and told us our daughter would be absolutely fine, that she wasn't dehydrated and that she was more than likely able to go home after seeing the doctor. As the nurse suspected she was "fine" we was put further down the line as a lower priority. In the time waiting to see a doctor I was trying to encourage my daughter to have her milk with no luck. As the time goes on which must have been approaching two/ three hours later, we finally get called to the doctor, the doctor then wanted to do some tests on my daughter as well as a sugar count.

Her sugar levels came back as critically low to the point where the doctors were now worried.... they took her blood and found she had a seriously high infection marker that needed antibiotics ASAP.

She was finally put on a drip and at around 3:30am was given antibiotics through a IV line. From arriving at the hospital to ending up in the children's ward it took roughly 8 hours to when my daughter deteriorated and was being treated for suspected sepsis. The care for my daughter on the ward didn't continue to get any better.

Unfortunately, we are not happy with the service that we received so from now on we shall be taking our daughter further afield if she requires hospital again in the future.

Dear Anonymous,

I would be really worried if this had been my experience and so I completely understand why you would feel this way. I do hope your concerns were resolved eventually by the people who you met and who provided face to face assurance and care. If you do not believe this to be the case, please make contact with a member of the Patient Experience Team in the main entrance. They are available Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm by email, telephone or in person.

The Family and Women's Service Children's Nursing Team are aware of what has happened here and are keen to speak to you to identify is there anything they can learn from your experience. We completely understand if you feel this is something you do not want to do, but we'd like to assure you that we realise we do not always get things right and we are keen to learn and develop by identifying any failings and putting in place processes to prevent their recurrence. If you feel able to do this, please contact us on 01279 827211 or email pals@pah.nhs.uk
