"Day surgery at private hospital (NHS referral)"

About: NHS Forth Valley

(as a service user),

I was contacted by a private hospital staff last month to advise my name had been passed to them by the NHS for my ganglion excision. I was told they had a cancellation available in 2 days time I accepted this appointment and was told that I should report to hospital at 7am for operation at 8am. My name and address details were checked and I was advised that a letter would arrive the next day with more details. I received a letter the following day at around 6pm, when I returned home after work. When I report to the hospital, it was discovered that they had my DOB wrong, but that they should be able to sort it out and I was to get changed into my gown and surgical stockings. I was then told at around 8am due to this mistake (on the private hospital's behalf) that I would now be seen second and there would be a 40 min delay. I then did not see or hear from staff for around 2 hours. I left my room and searched for staff fro an update. To be told that there had been issues printing new stickers with correct DOB (this seems ridiculous) and that there had been a delay with the first operation. When I asked why no one had been giving me updates (I fully understand that there can be unforeseen circumstances but it costs nothing for good customer service to keep people updated) I was told that "you know in the NHS your operation could have just been cancelled". At this point I did ask if I was being treated differently as I was not a fee paying patient. I think this comment was very unprofessional. As stated previously I know that there can unforeseen circumstances but to be left for hours with nobody telling you anything is totally unacceptable. Following my ganglion excision I had to buzz for a nurse as I was going to be sick and I was too disorientated to lower the bed sides myself. I went into the toilet to be sick and when I came back out a nurse had left me with some sick bowls. Over the next hour or so, not one member of staff came to check on me. Again I had to leave my room to ask if and when I would be allowed home. I was then told that I would have to pass urine to get home. At no point before this was I told anything about this stipulation. I did pass urine and had to go look for a staff member again. She removed my canula and told me she would be back in two minutes to check on me as I applied pressure to the site on my hand. 30 minutes later no one had returned. In between this I had been sick several more times. Not one staff member checked or asked about how I was feeling. I stopped applying pressure and went to find a member of staff about what I should do next. I asked them if they would contact my family or should I. I was told "you can phone them if you like" So I contacted my family member to come and pick me up. I then left my room again to ask a member of staff I flagged down, to enquire where I would meet my mum I. e. in my room or reception. I was told you can meet her where you like, just head up to reception if you want. I was still disorientated following my general anaesthetic, and basically staggered up the corridor with no staff member accompanying me and walked right out of the hospital to wait on my family member. I have to say that there was a total lack of care throughout my stay here, and if the NHS are paying for a service then frankly there is little to no good service at this hospital.

Dear weeT

Many thanks for getting in touch, I was really sorry to hear that you had such a difficult time when you went in for your surgery, this is not the level of care or treatment we would expect for any patient, it was very disappointing to hear of the difficulties you experienced.

Would it be possible for you to contact me as I would like to share your feedback with the hospital that you attended. You can contact me on 01324 566523 or you can email me Pauline.donnelly1@nhs.net.

I do hope you are recovering well from your surgery and look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards

Pauline
