"A&E visits"

About: North Middlesex Hospital / Accident and emergency

I’ve been to the A&E here a lot throughout the years for my dad. Each time it’s the same thing sometimes a little better patient care and sometimes subpar. I’m glad to report that I met a volunteer about a year ago here who took an active interest in my concerns and my fathers need. My father who is a type 2 diabetic didn’t have anything to eat for hours even prior to he sent to A&E I asked a few nurses and HCA is we can get a biscuit or two so I could feed him as I couldn’t leave him unattended. However 2 hours passed and nothing, I know they are busy, but it would only take 5mins for what I requested so he wouldn’t go hypo with his blood sugar levels which will directly influence his health. The volunteer popped by and within 10-20 not only did he bring food and tea for my dad but made it much more accommodating and hospitable for us. Again, today I was happy to see this gentleman who’s volunteering and to see a familiar face. He again made sure (in his capacity as a volunteer) that we were okay and had tea etc. A very helpful and thoughtful face whenever I come to the A&E especially when we are yet to be seen by the doctors as most of the time we are waiting for blood results to return.

I hope he continues to help people in a way that indirectly eases our concerns and helps us relax a little during stressful times in A&E. I hope he gets the much deserved recognition for his efforts,

Dear Anonymous,

I was extremely sorry to hear about your dads experience in the Emergency Department. It is not the expected standard of care for our patients. The senior team in the Emergency Department has reminded all staff that all patients must be treated with courtesy and dignity.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your recent very positive experience in our A&E department with our volunteer staff.

If you would like to talk to me about your experience, please contact our PALS department on northmid.pals@nhs.net or call 020 8887 3172, and she will pass your details on to me

Kind regards,

Anna-May Charles
