"Hysteroscopy"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Hospital last month suffering from severe pain and bleeding. My care while in Hospital was fantastic, the nurses were amazing. However the scan that I was due to have never happened and I was discharged to have an "emergency" outpatient scan and hysteroscopy. Over 3 weeks later I got an appointment. During the scan I was diagnosed with adenomyosis, fibroids and polyps. I had never heard of this condition before last Thursday, however I thought I would receive further information during my hysteroscopy procedure. I went into this "procedure" rather "green" as I had received NO information about a hysteroscopy and what to expect. All I received was an appointment letter. No booklet/leaflet/info. I had looked on the NHS website about the procedure and it states there is minimal discomfort and you could go back to work after the procedure. Happy days!!

Sadly there was more than minimal discomfort and there was NO WAY I could return to work afterwards! I was given a local anaesthetic but could still feel immense pain. The nurses were lovely and just kept talking to me when it was obvious I was in pain and crying. They kept saying how well I was doing and at the end of the procedure a Nurse told me how much better it was to get it over and done with this way rather than coming in for six hours and having a general anaesthetic. I was gobsmacked that this option or even the option of different pain relief such as sedation had never been offered to me! I was totally unaware! I came out of the procedure in pain, white as a sheet, shaking and very tearful. I've had various gynae procedures but never one as invasive and painful as this with minimal pain relief. I was not told to take painkillers beforehand, was offered no painkillers afterwards or given any after care advice apart from to see my GP in 6 weeks.

I felt quite traumatised afterwards and even woke up crying the day after.

I'm so disappointed that I was given NO INFORMATION  about this procedure beforehand and given no option for alternative pain relief or that I could be given a General Anaesthetic! Two days later and I'm still in discomfort and very tearful.

Thank you for getting in touch about your experience of our Gynaecology services. I was very sorry to read that you had such a distressing time whilst in our care and that you did not feel informed or supported before, during and after such a sensitive and invasive procedure.

I agree pain management is very important and an essential part of providing overall excellent care. It certainly sounds as if we didn’t manage your pain well in this instance. It would be really helpful if you felt able to contact my team to look into this further and make any improvements needed. Our contact number is 01253 95588.

Everything you discuss with us will be dealt with in the strictest confidence and will be passed onto the Head of Women’s Services for immediate action.

Yours sincerely

Eleanor Walsh
